Imperfect C++: Practical Solutions for Real-Life Programming

C++ is one of the most important languages today, but, as with all languages, it is not perfect. Far from it. Hence the topic (and title) of this book: practical techniques for dealing with problems that arise in C++ programming not because the programmer is inexperienced or incompetent, but because this otherwise powerful language is itself deficient in some respect. This book reduces the frustration and indecision programmers experience everyday when using C++. Far from being stymied by a lack of expressiveness in the language, it is commonly the vast array of potential paradigms and techniques supported by C++ that causes the problems. Too many choices.Too much complexity. Where to begin? Where to go? The author, having himself experienced inherent C++ deficiencies for years, presents detailed solutions for dealing with the aggravating problems they cause programmers.

From his musings on the psychology of the game to his opinions on strikes, trades, and cheating, this collection of spirited, incisive essays by the late Bart Giamatti--former president of the National League and Commissioner of Baseball--offers a thoughtful meditation on baseball, character, and values.By far the most literate of baseball's commissioners, the late Bart Giamatti, former president of Yale, was the game's most unashamedly vocal fan both before and during his tenure as chief executive. The child of immigrants, he embraced baseball's very Americanness, and ascribed to its simple goal--coming home--a far-reaching, overall metaphor. His ardor was unguarded and unabashed, his approach sentimental and as expansive as a pair of foul lines diverging in the distance. Giamatti's oversized passion infuses everything in this slim volume, from his wistful elegy to Tom Seaver and his admonition to fans to clean up their act, to his pained public statement banning Pete Rose from the game for life. Best of all, his seductively lyrical essay "The Green Fields of the Mind" leads off the lineup. The latter alone--it begins by poignantly observing of baseball, "It breaks your heart. It's designed to break your heart"--is worth the price of admission.

Knitting
by Ennor

Question by Fsd: How do i knit a sweater (please explain as simply as possible, no knitting jargon)?

I am using regular size 9 knitting needles, not the straight round ones.

I am planning on using a bulky yarn sized 6, but i dont think this detail matters.

Answer by Jess
The yarn size does matter.

It's almost impossible to say how to knit something without using "knitting jargon". Also, your best bet is to search the internet and find some sweater patterns.

Strange Times, My Dear: The Pen Anthology of Contemporary Iranian Literature

A rich and varied collection of contemporary short stories, extracts from novels, and poetry that will go a long way toward informing the English-speaking world of the latest developments in Iranian literature. Since the Iranian revolution of 1979, we have been virtually cut off from that country's culture. Despite severe difficulties imposed by social, political, and economic upheaval, war, repression, and censorship, there has been a veritable cultural renewal in Iran over the past 25 years, not only in literature, but also in music, art, and cinema. Now for the first time we have selections from the work of over 50 men and women from three generations in translation, which goes a long way toward filling that gap. This sampling-or to use the Farsi term golchine, a bouquet-provides a window onto an important but sorely neglected segment of world culture. Hopefully it will also serve to awaken further interest in the work and translation of Iranian novelists and poets. The poetry section is edited and introduced by Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak, professor of Persian literature at the University of Maryland.

For many, Thomas Carlyle's put-down of economics as "the dismal science" rings true--especially in the aftermath of the crash of 2008. But Diane Coyle argues that economics today is more soulful than dismal, a more practical and human science than ever before. The Soulful Science describes the remarkable creative renaissance in economics, how economic thinking is being applied to the paradoxes of everyday life.

This revised edition incorporates the latest developments in the field, including the rise of behavioral finance, the failure of carbon trading, and the growing trend of government bailouts. She also discusses such major debates as the relationship between economic statistics and presidential elections, the boundary between private choice and public action, and who is to blame for today's banking crisis.

Answer by Serena
My knowledge of New York geography is a little rusty, so all of these may be a bit of a trek for you. But I hope this list will be helpful. Also, if going to a physical store becomes too much of a chore, you could also explore online shops.
